Senator J.D. Vance was named the Republican Vice President Candidate this week, and his wife Usha was a featured speaker. She is the daughter of immigrants from India, an attorney, and a mother. TikTok creator Isvari Maranwe posted that Usha Vance is conservative because she comes from an upper caste in India. According to Isvari, these upper castes are the only people in India who had the privilege of access to education to learn math and science, which gave them the opportunity to immigrate to the US in the 1980s for tech jobs. Another South Asian TicTokker who is an expert in history, Seema R, challenges Isvari’s perspective as being dangerous because it falls into the model minority stereotype and other narrow viewpoints about South Asians.
