Recently, on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Maya Hawke told host Josh Horowitz that she’s confused about this period of social media and personality where having lots of followers can get a movie funded, and it’s difficult to get funding for movies. Hawke shared that has talked to several “smart directors” about deleting her Instagram because she hates social media, but those directors have said to her, ‘Just so you when I’m casting a movie with some producers, they hand me [the directors] a sheet with the amount of collective followers the director must get of the cast that I cast… so if you delete your Instagram, and I lose those followers… understand that these are the kinds of people that I need to cast around you… so it’s confusing…. I’m thinking out loud with you, and this will be a lifelong question for me.”
